Halloween in New Orleans

We spontaneously decided to book a trip to New Orleans in honor of her birthday- 1. Because it’s such a beautiful city with a rich history and 2. We’re diehard Vampire Diaries and Originals fans so of course we had to visit. Also, Halloween in New Orleans?? How much spookier can you get?

Happy Wednesday Variety friends! I was hoping to have this post out last week, but I was out of town celebrating my best friend’s birthday, which happens to fall on Halloween! So we’re gonna extend the spooky celebration by one more week, hope ya’ll don’t mind!

I’m super excited about this post in particular because I get to relive one of the best trips I’ve taken so far, with the above mentioned best friend, Megan.

P.S. Keep reading to the end for a fun surprise.

The Itinerary

I mapped out the trip in my bullet journal.
You can see where I started drawing the different logos to places (bottom right) but never finished, haha.

So we were there for five days total, and tried to cram as many activities and sightseeing as we could into the week without being overwhelmed. It worked out so well, because we were able to sleep in a little everyday, eat at a local restaurant, sightsee/walk around the French Quarter or the Arts District, and then go to whatever activity we had planned later in the day. Then we usually ended the night by going to Bourbon Street to get drinks, walk around and listen to the music/experience the night life.

  • Monday
    • The first day was pretty chill. We got to the city about 9:30am and check in wasn’t until about 3pm, so we ate breakfast and went to the hotel to drop off our suitcases and clean up, then started walking around the French Quarter. Most of the sightseeing this afternoon was down Royal Street, we did a lot of antiquing and checking out the different stores. We ate lunch, went back to the hotel to nap, and then got ready to go out for the night on Bourbon Street.
  • Tuesday
    • This day was a little rainy but we didn’t let it stop us. We bought tickets to go to a swamp tour at Jean Lafitte and it was perfect for the rainy day. I really enjoyed getting to see the Bayou, since we were staying in the city, it was cool to see a different side to New Orleans. That night we also had tickets for a Ghost Tour, which I highly recommend. Our tour guide took us all around the French Quarter and told us different stories about the city and different locations/buildings that had a spooky history. It was very themed and awesome to do at night since it set the scene.
  • Wednesday
    • We did more sightseeing on this day, but we ventured out to the Arts District to see the Lafayette Cemetery, different shops, and beautiful houses. We also made a stop to the Museum of Death, which is not for the faint-hearted. It was really interesting to see the different exhibits and items in the museum, it wasn’t very big but there were a lot of things inside so it actually kept us occupied for a while. Since Megan’s birthday was the next day, we went out to Bourbon Street again so we could be awake when the clock struck midnight. This was so fun getting to be right in the middle of the city as it turned to her birthday.
  • Thursday– The Spooky Day has arrived!! Happy birthday Megan!!
    • We went for breakfast at this restaurant we really liked, Stanley, and they played all kinds of spooky music so it really put us in the Halloween mood. We did some more sightseeing and walking around, and then of course, we put on our costumes and went to Bourbon Street (is this a surprise?) I think this was my favorite night, seeing everyone in costume, the streets flooded with people, and just having a great time.
  • Friday– Last day 😦
    • This day was pretty chill, very similar to Monday when we arrived. We packed up, checked out, grabbed lunch, and then just hung around near Jackson Square and watched some street performers until we needed to head to the airport. Definitely the perfect way to end the trip.

New Orleans I Love You

This was my first “big girl trip” without my family, or going to visit family. It was the first time Megan or myself had been alone in a new city so it was such an amazing experience to share with her. I would definitely recommend grabbing your bff and taking a spontaneous trip like this, it’s so worth it! Also, 10/10 recommend going to New Orleans! The city is beautiful, the music is wonderful, and the nightlife is vibrant. Truly incredible. I took lots of video and vlogged a bit to capture this trip as best I can so below you’ll find the link to the Youtube video of this trip- surprise! I hope you enjoy it!

Have you ever taken a spontaneous trip? What was it like? Have you visited New Orleans? What were your favorite spots? What’s one place on your travel bucket list?

Fall in Texas: Big Orange Pumpkin Farm

I searched a couple places and landed on Preston Trail Farms and their Big Orange Pumpkin Farm. It’s north of Dallas, located in Gunter, Texas and wasn’t a bad drive at all. The drive was filled with lots and lots of trees and countryside. I missed the scenic route that Ohio provides, so I enjoyed this a lot.

One of my absolute favorite things to do during Fall is visit a pumpkin patch. In Ohio pumpkin patches are HUGE, and I mean literally and figuratively. There’s always so many activities, things to see, and great food. I love finding my way through a corn maze, eating kettle corn, seeing the spooky decorations, picking out the perfect pumpkin(s), and of course taking the cutest pictures. So I made it my first priority to find a great pumpkin patch in Texas to try and satisfy my Fall heart. Needless to say, the one I found did not disappoint- it doesn’t compare to the Ohio ones but it sure came close.

The drive was filled with lots and lots of trees and countryside. I missed the scenic route that Ohio provides, so I enjoyed this a lot. It was far away from the big city and noise and was a great mini getaway.

The pumpkin patch is open until November 25th. The farm has a Hardware/Feed store with a cafe, gift shop, pumpkin patch (duh), hayride, haymaze, and a petting farm- woah! Admission is only $10 and you don’t have to reserve a spot, which was nice, because a lot of other places that did that were completely booked.

Monday-Friday admission is $10 and includes:

  • one small pumpkin from patch
  • feed for petting barn
  • hayride
  • roping pen
  • hay maze

Saturday/Sunday admission is $10 and includes:

  • farm train
  • feed for petting barn
  • hayride
  • roping pen
  • hay maze

An Unbe-leaf-ably Great Time!

My family and I loved this place. There were lots of fun activities for everyone, including my nephews, who get bored easily, so this was great! The pumpkin selection was a little smaller than what I’m used to, but they had a good variety to choose from and the prices were reasonable too. I got 5 pumpkins (2 smalls, and 3 babies) for $7! The haymaze wasn’t too big, I’d say it’s geared more towards kids. It was definitely still fun, though, running around it with my nephews playing hide-n-seek. The hayride was pretty good too, it took you around the further part of the farm, where it was more quiet and empty. It was beautiful weather and so peaceful just riding around looking at the animals and scenery. Lastly, I think mine and my family’s favorite part was the petting farm. It was so fun feeding the cows and goats and watching my nephews try to feed them too. The goats were the cutest, they nibbled the feed right out of my hand and were so chill, I loved it.

If you’re from the North Texas area I would highly recommend taking a trip to Preston Trail Farms. It’s the perfect place for families and to celebrate Fall in a fun and inexpensive way. If you get the chance to visit, or have already visited, let me know what you thought!

Are you planning to go to a pumpkin patch this year? If so, which one? What’s your favorite thing to do at a pumpkin patch? Big pumpkins or little pumpkins?

10 Best Halloween Movies to Watch this October

One of my favorite things to do in October is create a list of my all time favorite movies to watch in the spirit of Halloween. The list might be a bit different every year, but my top 10 will always stay the same. These are the classic, must-sees every year that never get old and in my opinion are the epitome of Halloween movies.

What’s up ya’ll! We’re back with another spooky themed post! One of my favorite things to do in October is create a list of my all time favorite movies to watch in the spirit of Halloween. The list might be a bit different every year, but my top 10 will always stay the same. These are the classic, must-sees every year that never get old and in my opinion are the epitome of Halloween movies. Don’t get me wrong, there are loads of other great Halloween movies that I have on the bigger list, but like I said these are my top 10. So, in no particular order, let’s dive into it!

Halloween (1978)

The king of Halloween, Michael Myers, carries the holiday on his back- accompanied by the queen, Jamie Lee Curtis, of course. This slasher film is the embodiment of the scary, more spooky side of Halloween. It follows a mental patient committed for murder who escapes the asylum and returns to his hometown for a killing spree.

Where to watch: Free on Roku Channel, $1.99 on Redbox app, $3.99 on Prime Video

Scream (1996)

This black comedy, slasher film takes scary movies to the next level. The plot focuses on the clichés of the horror movie genre combined with some mystery of who the killer is. The movie is set in the town of Woodsboro and follows a high schooler named Sidney Prescott and her friends as they try to discover who the murderer, “Ghostface”, is.

Where to watch: $2.99 on Prime Video

Hocus Pocus (1993)

You must let the Sanderson sisters grace your screen this October. This fun, family friendly movie is set in Salem, Massachusetts as a young boy accidentally resurrects three evil witches who were executed in the 17th century. Watch to see their evil plan and the trouble they’ll cause begin to unfold.

Where to watch: Free with Disney+

Halloweentown (1998)

Marnie Cromwell is my absolute favorite Halloween character. This movie is the perfect witch coming-of-age story with an emphasis on the power of family strength, and magic obviously. Opposite of Halloween, this movie is the embodiment of the more innocent, child-like spirit of Halloween- the fun of magic, the possibility of becoming someone different, and people (and creatures) of different backgrounds coming together for the greater good.

Where to watch: Free with Disney+

Beetlejuice (1988)

This “horror” movie with a comedic twist follows a couple who have recently died and now haunt their previous home as new residents move in. They hire help from the wicked poltergeist, Beetlejuice, to try and drive the new family out. This movie promises to give you some good laughs as the terror and mischief unfolds.

Where to watch: $3.99 Prime Video

Twitches (2005)+ Twitches Too (2007)

Another fan favorite, alongside Halloweentown, is this heartwarming story of two twin sisters separated at birth who meet on their 21st birthday. Add in the element of magic and danger as they need to use their newfound powers to save their birth world and birth mother and you’ve got the perfect recipe for a homecoming/heroines story.

Where to watch: Free with Disney+

The Addams Family (1991)+ Addams Family Values (1993)

“They’re creepy and they’re kooky, mysterious and spooky, they’re altogether ooky, The Addams Family.” If you’re looking for some fun antics, a wacky family, and good laughs this movie is sure to give you the perfect spooky vibes, without the nightmares.

Where to watch: Free with Prime Video, Free with Netflix (The Addams Family)

Insidious (2010)

On the other hand, if you are looking for a true spook, this movie is sure to make you leave your light on and grab your blanket for protection. A family tries to fight off evil spirits from haunting their child. The scariest part is that the house isn’t haunted, but the child- so you can’t exactly run away.

Where to watch: $2.99 on Prime Video

A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984)

If you’re looking for a real unsettling horror movie, give this slasher film a watch. You might think there’s nothing worse than a nightmare, but Freddy Kruger show us that’s not the case. He preys on teenagers by haunting them in their sleep and killing them. At least you can wake up from a nightmare…

Where to watch: $2.99 on Prime Video

Friday the 13th (1980)

This was the first scary movie I ever watched, and with good reason. The 80’s classic makes Friday the 13th more than just another date on the calendar. A group of camp counselors are being murdered at the summer camp where a child had drowned years before, as they begin reopening.

Where to watch: $2.99 on Prime Video

I hope you guys enjoyed my take on the best/classic Halloween movies! Make sure to add some (or all!) of these to your list to watch this October. If you’re looking to make a night of watching some of these, read my other post How to Have a Spooky Night In to see how I get cozy for a Halloween movie night.

How to Have a Spooky Night In

Happy October ya’ll! It’s finally my favorite month in my favorite season. I don’t know about you, but I love Fall and Halloween. The aesthetic is unmatched, the weather is the best, everything begins to quiet down, and there are so many fun themed activities to do during this time.

Happy October ya’ll! It’s finally my favorite month in my favorite season. I don’t know about you, but I love Fall and Halloween. The aesthetic is unmatched, the weather is the best, everything begins to quiet down, and there are so many fun themed activities to do during this time. One of my favorite things to do is settle in (either by myself or with friends) get cozy, and have a spooky night in. So I thought I’d give ya’ll a how to, so you can plan one for yourself!

Get the Aesthetics Going!

  1. Light some Fall scented candles
    • I bought my candles from Target in the scents Apple Blossom & Breeze and Twilight Woods & Amber and let me tell you these two combined make the perfect Fall scent.
  2. Make a hot cup of tea
    • Nothing puts you in a relaxing mood more than a hot cup of tea. I usually go for black tea with some sugar, but pick whatever flavor you like and get to brewing! And if you don’t prefer tea, you can always get a glass of apple cider or hot chocolate!
  3. Put on your best Fall/spooky clothes
    • Funny enough I left all my Halloween shirts in Ohio when I came to Texas, so I don’t have those to wear. But my favorite one is a soft black tee from Hot Topic that says “Normal People Scare Me,” a quote from American Horror Story. Then, I’ll throw on some comfy leggings and my pick of Halloween socks. Tonight I’m wearing ones with pumpkins, I also have some with bats, and skeleton feet.

Pick a Spooky Movie

I love any spooky movie, from horror to Disney. But, usually the first movie I watch to “ring in” spooky season is Halloweentown. I think this movie perfectly encompasses the spirit of Halloween, paired with the classic theme music this movie really makes my heart full and puts me in the Halloween-mood. Pick your favorite spooky movie (or two), queue it up on whatever streaming service you have and get ready to unwind.

You’re All Set!

You did it, you completed the to-do list and now you’re ready to relax and enjoy. Invite some friends or settle in by yourself (if this is quality “me” time) and soak up that Fall/Halloween feeling. Don’t forget to grab a cozy blanket!

How do you like to spend your spooky nights in? What else would you add to my list? What’s your favorite Halloween movie? Favorite candle scent?
